CELEBRATION OF COMMUNITY

Life was not easy for pioneer women. Besides the everyday chores of cleaning, cooking and washing without running water or electricity, women had to milk the cow, bake their own bread and preserve all the food for the winter months ahead. Times were hard for most settlers and they had to make do with what they had. Garments, that were outgrown or beyond mending, were pieced together to make blankets for a little added warmth in their cold and drafty cabins.

Eventually, as times got better and new fabrics were more readily available, leftovers from sewing family clothing were used to make prettier quilts. The women spent many a winter afternoon preparing quilt tops. When the weather broke and travel became easier, the women then got together for quilting bees to make short work of the task and enjoy each others company.

To commemorate the settlers of our community, the Breslau Monday Night Quilters combined their talents to create this quilt for the Breslau Homecoming 2005 silent auction. A community quilting bee was held in true pioneer spirit. This quilt gives voice to life’s important moments in Breslau and in years to come will be a way to identify those who went before.

We worked together as a community and this is the result.

The Breslau Homecoming 2005 quilt

was on display at the St Jacobs Schoolhouse Theatre during

the Waterloo County & Area Quilt Festival in May of this year.

This was quite an honour!!!
