Breslau and District Recreation Association Events, Programming and Announcements

Annual General Meeting

The Annual Meeting of the Breslau Recreation Association will be held on Wednesday, September 28th.

Little Libraries

Use of the Little Libraries at the Breslau Community Centre and in the Hopewell Heights Park has exceeded expectations. At the present time our supply of books, especially in the children’s section, is exhausted. If you have books that you have borrowed and could return them for others to use, please do so. If you have books of your own that you wish to contribute, simply put them in a Little Library and they will then circulate along with those we already have.

Volunteer Coordinator

The Breslau Recreation Association is in need of a Volunteer Coordinator. The position involves maintaining a list of those willing to volunteer at the Association’s events throughout the year and working with event organizers to ensure that sufficient help is available at each event. While there are vacancies on the Board of Directors, the position does not require joining the board as a director. For further information please contact president@breslau.org.

Lock it or Lose it

A vehicle with an unlocked door or an open window is an easy target.

Easy ways to protect your vehicle from theft are to always roll up your vehicle’s windows, lock the doors and pocket the keys when you park your car. Park in a well-lit area and never leave valuables in plain view. If you have a garage, use it and lock the door as well as your vehicle. Thieves are opportunists. They look for the easiest opportunity and if they can’t find it they will usually move on to the next vehicle.

Home Security

Break and enter to homes are less common then vehicle’s but they do occur. The following are some tips to help you lower your chances of being a victim.

Check your landscaping – ensure your trees and gardens are trimmed to maximize eyewitness potential and are located as to not allow access to the second floor. If your property is fenced ensure that the gates are routinely locked.

Check your lighting – Do you have motion activated lights? Ensure there is adequate lighting to prevent hiding near windows and doors?

Windows – Check your windows have working locks. Do your basement windows have any security bars? Have you considered window security film? If you have sliding windows ensure they are secured with screws or bars

Door and Locks -  Are your exterior doors solid core or steel? Do you have a peep hole on your exterior door? Ensure your sliding doors are secured by screws or bars

Garage/Sheds – Are garage windows secured to deny access at all times? Do not leave garage openers in vehicles parked outside of the garage. Ensure that your interior main door is locked. Sheds and any other out buildings should be locked. Ensure that ladders are also kept in a locked area.

Alarm Systems – Have you considered an alarm system? Ensure your alarm company has a current contact list. Ensure all responsible persons know how to arm and disarm the alarm.

When Away – When you will be away from your residence for an extended period of time ask trusted friends or neighbours to watch your property, pick up your mail and newspapers (if not stopped or re-routed) and consider interior lights on timers. Also pre-book lawn maintenance and snow removal.

If you see any suspicious activity both day or night please contact the Waterloo Regional Police at

519-653-7700 or 911 if it is an emergency.
